The Idea of a Writing Center in Asian Countries: The Preliminary Search of a Model in Taiwan

Abstract


Writing centers in the U.S. are experiencing more diverse student populations than ever before. The increase in diversity affects the ways centers function, such as training program, mentorship, tutoring strategies, and one-on-one interactions with students. Instead of closely examining the model writing centers adopt in the U.S., this paper investigates those centers placed in Asian countries where are the places most international students come from to provide a different perspective of understanding the operation of the writing centers in L2 contexts. Such a perspective helps index the ways of dealing with a more diversified writing center in the U.S.

This paper starts to briefly review the history of writing center in the U.S. and discuss the effects that the North American writing centers bring to Asian countries’ higher education. The literature review on Asian writing centers presents the differences and similarities between American and non-American writing centers in terms of the services centers offer, role tutors play, and format of one-on-one interactions. The overview of the status the Asian writing centers have prepares for the close-look at the centers placed at the seven Taiwan traditional public universities. Specifically locating Taiwan context, the author discusses these centers’ development and intends to keep the record of it in higher education. Through the extensive web research along with phone interview on the status of the writing centers, these centers seem to function differently from North American centers. Those Taiwan writing centers are classified into three models according to the following criteria, purpose of founding, target students, target tutors, services offered, and centers’ affiliation.
