Use of Immediacy and Avoidance Techniques in Online Tutorials

Kathryn Rosser Raign

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study in which I coded 14 transcripts of online tutorials for the tutor's use of both verbal immediacy techiques and verbal avoidance techniques. My research suggests that if students consciously use immediacy techniques, the satisfaction level of the student being tutored will be higher than that of student whose tutors used low levels of immediacy techniques. My data clearly supports this hypothesis, and the article concludes with suggestions for training tutors who work in online environments to use verbal immediacy techniques.
